Future Forum Members Hold Monthly Member Meeting with Actor Ed Helms

April 15, 2021

The group discussed H.R. 1, the For the People Act of 2021 and the significance of advocating for important issues in Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, during their monthly meeting, members of the Future Forum Caucus participated in a discussion with actor Ed Helms on H.R. 1, the For the People Act of 2021 and the importance of fighting against voter suppression, dark money in politics, and gerrymandering.

"I feel like H.R. 1 is really the fight of our generation," said Mr. Helms during the meeting. "It's an opportunity that may not come around again for a very long long time, and the price of losing this fight is just too great."

In the beginning of the 117th Congress, House Democrats introduced H.R. 1, the For the People Act of 2021 – a sweeping piece of legislation that expands voting rights, addresses corporate influence in politics, and promotes integrity in the democratic process, among other things. All members of the Future Forum Caucus voted to pass the bill in March.

During the Q&A portion of the meeting, members had the opportunity to ask Mr. Helms about his advocacy efforts, the impact celebrity voices have on politics, and, of course, his work on the hit television show, "The Office." When responding, Mr. Helms spoke about his upbringing in a progressive family, the necessity of speaking out when injustices occur, and his feeling of pride towards being part of an industry that takes a stand on important issues.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Helms encouraged members to "stay in the fight and keep yourself motivated."
